How come that blood on your coat sleeve? Son come telling to me. Well it is the blood of the little guinea jayhawk That flew away from me. But it is too red for that my son. Come now telling to me. So it is the blood of the little yella dog That ran beside of me. But it's too red for dog's blood, my son. Come now be truthful with me. Then it is the blood of the little spotted pony That plowed a furrow for me. No it's not the blood of a horse my son. Oh why do you lie to me? For it is the blood of my own brother dear Whom I murdered most cruelly. Dear mother please pity me. What did you boys fight about? Come now telling to me. Well we fell out about a sprout That might have been a tree. And what will you do when your father comes home? Son come telling to me? Well I'll set my foot on yonder ship And sail across the sea. And what of your wife, your blushing June bride? And pretty young children three? Well they'll stay here with you mother dear And them never no more will I see.

Pretty Polly 03:34
He used to be a rambler he'd been around this town. He used to be a rambler he'd been around this town. He courted Pretty Polly though she'd been around. Oh Polly, Pretty Polly come go along with me. Polly, Pretty Polly come go along with me. Before we get married some pleasure to see. So he led her over mountains and valleys so deep. Yonder over mountains and valleys so deep. And after a while Pretty Polly did weep. Saying "William, sweet William I'm wary of your ways. William, sweet William I'm wary of your ways. I'm worried that your gonna lead this poor girl astray." "Oh Polly, Pretty Polly your guessing about right. Polly, Pretty Polly your guessing about right. You see I dug the best part of your grave in the night." Then he led her a little further and what did she spy? Just a little further and what did she spy But a new dug grave with a spade lying by. Then she lay down before him pleading for her life. Lay down before him pleading for her life. Saying "let me stay single, I can't be your wife." "Oh Polly, Pretty Polly that never can be. Polly, Pretty Polly that never can be. Your bad reputation's been trouble to me." Then he opened up her bosom as white as any snow. Opened up her bosom as white as any snow. Stabbed her right through the heart, how the blood it did flow. Then he threw the dirt around her and left in the dawn. Threw the dirt around her and left in the dawn. Leaving no-one but the little brown sparrows to mourn. So stranger, dear stranger I say this to you. Stranger, dear stranger I say this to you. It's a terrible story but each word of it's true.

Down in the willow garden My love and I did meet, And as we sat a-courting My love dropped off to sleep. I'd had a bottle of burgundy wine My young love did not know, And there I murdered that dear little girl Down by the banks below. I drove my sabre through her, A sharp and bloody knife. I drowned her in the river, It were an awful site. My pappy always told me That money would set me free If I'd just murder that dear little girl Whose name was Rose Connelly. But now he darkens his own cottage door And wipes his weepin' eyes, A-gazing at his only son Upon the gallows high. For my race is run beneath the sun And hell's a waiting for me 'Cos I done murdered that dear little girl Whose name was Rose Connelly. Yeah my race is run beneath the sun And hell's a waiting for me 'Cos I done murdered that dear little girl Whose name was Rose Connelly.

The ole black sheep Is looking for her lamb Way down in the meadow. The buzzards and the flies Are picking out it's eyes And the poor lamb cries "Mammy". My mother told me To take good care of the baby, But I just laid And the baby strayed Way down in the meadow. And I'll roving, roving gory-o go I could not find my baby-o And I'll roving, roving gory-o go Way down in the meadow.
